What you need to do to improve user experience (UX) on your website

A part of our: “All things Website Design Related” Series

The experience that your users get while using your website will determine whether they will visit your site again or not. User experience (UX) is also one of the factors search engines use while raking content in search results. In today’s article, I want to dive deep into some of the things you can do to enhance the user experience of your website.

Before we get into the different UX strategies, let’s first define what exactly UX is.

What is user experience (UX)?

User experience refers to the emotions that users get while interacting with a product such as a website. This experience can either be positive or negative. For instance, if your web pages take a long to load, that’s a bad (negative) user experience.

Now that we know what user experience means, let’s get into the strategies you can use to enhance the user experience on your site.

Optimize your page loading speeds

As computers and the internet continue to get faster, people are no longer willing to wait for pages that take several seconds to load. According to a study by Section.io, every extra 5 seconds that a webpage takes to load can lead to a 20% increase in the bounce rate.

If you use WordPress as your website builder, there are a couple of plugins that can help you boost your site speeds. One of the plugins you can use to increase page loading speeds is WP Rocket. This plugin caches data of all your web pages, making them load faster the next time someone requests the same pages.

Leave enough white space

A website with enough white spacing on the side and within the different sections of the content improves readability, which enhances the user experience for site visitors. Over congesting your website makes it look messy, which hurts the experience of your website visitors. Several studies have proved that having enough white space around your text increases attention by almost 20%.

Think about navigation

One of the core aspects of user experience is navigation. You need to make it as easy as possible for your users to navigate between the different web pages of your site. One of the easiest ways you can use to improve navigation is through having helpful menus. Your main menu should have links to all the major web pages of your site.

When you visit a popular website like Ford’s, you will find out that their menu has all the major categories of the cars they sell. This makes it easy for potential customers to find the product they need without wasting a lot of time on the website.

Use headings appropriately

H1, H2, and H3 tags make it easier for your audience to read and navigate your content to find what they are looking for. While creating content for your blog or web pages, always add headings and subheadings to enhance content readability and navigation.
